I love general conference weekend. Next to Christmas, it's my favorite time of year. I mean, who wouldn't get excited to hear chosen servants of God speak to us concerning the things that He would like for us to hear and learn? Plus, hearing uplifting hymns sung by a talented choir really touches my heart.
And, watching it from the comfort of my own home, in my pj's, surrounded by endless snacks is a bonus, too...as the following picture illustrates, ha!
All joking aside, I truly do love this time of year (as well as the session during the fall; it's a bi-annual thing). I tend to use general conference as a check-in for myself: have I kept to doing what was asked during last conference? Am I spiritually stronger since then? I am not perfect and have many, many things to work on, and after being spiritually fed and edified during conference renews my desire to work harder to become better.
Do I succeed? Heck no! It's too easy to become lazy about reading my scriptures or being patient. But, I do try and I am better than when I first started. And, that's what I love about this gospel; it's a gospel of second chances. No matter how many times we fail, fall or despair, we can always try again and again. We will never be perfect in this life, but if we try our very best in doing the things we know we're supposed to do and learn, we're good.
I love that over these two days, I learn something new about something that I already knew or that a certain principle is reaffirmed for me. You never stop learning and there is always something to learn and grow from in this gospel; I love it! And now that the kids are older, we've made it a habit for them to sit and watch with us. Sure, they may be drawing or building Legos, but at least the words of the speakers are withing hearing, and I know they're subconsciously absorbing the messages.
At least, I hope they are.
But, we're together as a family, soaking it all in, and that's all I could ask for.
