My baby is EIGHT!

Today is this dude's birthday!

He turned 8 yrs. old. Whaaat? When did he get to be so old? When did I get to be so old? Okay, not really, but I'm sure all parents go through that question when their youngest celebrates another birthday.

Or is it just me?

It's been a roller coaster of emotions with this kid, mainly because he's the last. With each milestone and accomplishment he's reached, it's been a mixture of pride and a bit of sadness. The years have gone by quick and here we are.

Jeff is much like his oldest brother Ryan; their personalities are similar, which makes them butt heads and annoy one another often. But, at this point, Jeff is more outgoing and not afraid to go after things that he wants. Despite that drive, he's still tender-hearted and loves giving and receiving affection.

Since his birthday fell on a Sunday, and we normally go to my parents' house for Sunday dinner, Jeff got the royal treatment: his favorite dinner, Korean Chicken. Or so he says. Honestly, I can't remember him ever liking it (it's my favorite), but he requested it, and Papa made it.

Also, no birthday is complete without a cake made by Tutu. It's a mixture of some of Jeff's favorite things: minions, soccer, and vanilla cake. Spoiled!

And, of course, a video of all the birthday action:

By the end of it all, we had one happy Fire Pig! And when the Fire Pig is happy, it usually means everyone is smiling and laughing! Happy Birthday, Jeff! Here's to more fun times with you! We love you so much!

8 Reasons Why I Love Jeff:

1. I don't have to ask for kisses or snuggles.

2. He makes me laugh, really hard.

3. He talks to himself while playing video games and has the funniest conversations!

4. His smile is contagious.

5. He loves his brothers and sister.

6. He's friendly and easily makes friends.

7. He easily gets lost in his imagination and stays there for hours.

8. He tells me he loves me all the time.

Birthday Adventure

Jeff's birthday is coming up soon, so we decided to do some early birthday shopping. The toy he wanted is apparently a hot ticket item that everyone wants (Lego Star Wars Death Stare) and is hard to find, so I thought a trip to Toys R Us would help him find something else.

To make things a bit more exciting, we also decided to take the Trax, since one of the stops is right next to the nearest Toys R Us. So off we went!

Anxiously waiting for the Trax. I think the last time they rode it was maybe a year or two ago.

Got off the Red Line and now waiting for the Green Line. Had to take more pictures of course.

After spending an hour looking at all of the toys, we hopped across the street to have lunch at Smashburger, Jeff's favorite restaurant...at the moment.

This is what he ended up picking. You can't tell, but the box is really wide, and it's a bit weighty. After hauling it across the street to get to Smashburger, I was beginning to regret not driving.

You can probably guess how big the mess was when we got home. There were several packages of Mega Blok pieces, as well as the three instruction manuals. Jeff started it off, got a bit tired and let Ethan take over. Ethan is our resident builder, so he was more than happy to take over.

We'll see how long that happiness lasts...

Fall Ball 2015

After cancelling the first game due to weather, Ryan played his first game for Fall Ball. The excitement was just vibrating off of him today; I wonder how he made it through the school day, lol.

They played against Bingham, and despite a bit of a slow start, they won 11-3. Ryan is still a middie (midfielder position), but his (new) coach (it's a different one from last season) gave him another responsibility. Now, bear with me, I can't recall exactly what it's called, but he'll also be "playing x"...I think that's the proper description. You would think after 3 years of this, I would know, but, I don't.

Anyway, Coach wants Ryan to play behind the goal when the opportunity presents itself. Ryan's dodging and defensive skills have improved to the point that his coach wants him to get more into the action, as it were. We'll see how it works out.

Here come the action shots....

Starting things off

Running towards the action

Exhibiting his passing skills

Going for a goal (unfortunately he missed)

Passing it off to a teammate who scored. Nice assist, Ryan!
Here's some shots of Ryan "playing x":
Going around the back of the goal....

Coming around.....

Taking the shot...only to have it bounce off of the pole!
Bummer!
In the past he's always been in front of the goal, playing. So we'll have to wait and see how this new position pans out. Way to go, Grizzlies! You're off to a great start!

Reading

I'm an avid reader; I love to read and have since I was little. Growing up, my sister and younger brother would spend part of our summer days walking to the public library to borrow stacks of books to read. And, as I got older, I taught myself how to speed read, which freed up a lot more time to read.

When Scott and I started our family, I promised myself that my kids would love reading as much as me. And, for awhile, I thought I was on the right track with Ryan. He went through his reading assignments from school so fast that I thought, "Yes!"

But then, he discovered sports (and ultimately, lacrosse) and reading took a backseat to everything.

With Ethan, it was a bit of a struggle. He was a lot like Ryan, just reading because of school assignments. When we decided to homeschool him, it became even more challenging because his Aspergers made it hard to gauge where he fell on the reading levels. We tried small chapter books and some shorter kids' novels, but he was resistant and seemed bored.

It was only after I decided to do away with anything that "measured" my kids progress and concentrate on what I thought was important for them to learn and know that we finally found these books in answer to Ethan's reading "dilemma":

Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series. He found the first book on our bookshelf and proceeded to breeze right through it. When he found out there was a second series, The Lost Hero set, it didn't take him long to read those books either.

Over and over again.

This past summer, he decided to read the Lost Hero series again, and because he seemed so into it, I bought the Percy Jackson encyclopedia for him. It's a "who's who" book of the Greek Gods, written from Percy Jackson's point-of-view, which makes for some sarcastic and hilarious observations. Ethan really gets a kick out of it.

He finished the last book while were in Hawaii, and began looking for a new one when we returned. Luckily, we had the first two books of Riordan's Red Pyramid series, and now he's on the third book.
I love that on most days I'll find him in his room, reading or excitedly telling me about the chapter he'd read.

Meanwhile, Jeff is still a beginning reader and improving everyday. I love how surprised he is when he realizes he just read a whole book on his own, with no struggles. He has so much potential and he continues to get better everyday.

On the other hand, I've never really worried about Vanessa's reading until recently. The Crack Monkeys had a habit of borrowing books from the library and losing them, which resulted in large library fines, which in turn, led Scott and I to the decision to buy books for the kids to start their own "library."

{My mom used to take us to thrift stores and used bookstores where we would find piles upon piles of books for the bookshelf in our bedroom. I remember finding my very first Agatha Christie book at one of those stores when I was 10 years old and being hooked ever since!}

In the past, Vanessa would buy those small chapter books according to her interests at the time -My Little Pony, The Littlest Pet Shop, etc.- but as we approached our second year of homeschooling, it seemed way below what I knew she could read.

And so, much like with Ethan, I began to search through the small library we had. Beverly Cleary, The Magic Treehouse, even Harry Potter didn't seem to interest her and The How To Train Your Dragon series went untouched!

What's a mama to do?

It wasn't until we got back from our vacation and were starting up the second week of the new homeschool year, that I stumbled upon this:

I'd first heard about the movie from my Facebook newsfeed; everyone seemed to be going crazy over it, but I didn't pay much attention because we were planning and packing for our vacation. But, I happened upon the giant display in Barnes & Noble while looking for a math workbook for Jeff, and decided to get it for Vanessa. We're big fans of Disney, so why not buy a book about the children of some of Disney's greatest villains?

I gave it to Vanessa, who looked slightly interested, and crossed my fingers. And toes. I would've crossed my eyes, but I don't possess that talent.

Anyway, by the next day, she was halfway through and excitedly telling me what was going on so far. I had no idea who the characters she was talking about were, but I'd never seen her this excited about reading, so I went with it.

She nearly fainted when I told her there was a movie, and that we could watch it when she finished the book.

She finished the book that night.

The movie was available on Amazon, so we bought it and made a movie night out of it. It's Disney, so there were quite a few cheesy, feel-good moments, but overall, it was a good movie; even my boys enjoyed the singing and dancing!

We've watched it quite a few times since then, and Vanessa continues to read the books over and over again. I'll have to check, but I think there are more books in the series, so hopefully we've found a winner for Vanessa's reading.

Crossing my fingers (and toes).

Fall soccer...it's on!

I mentioned yesterday that Jeff has his first practice today. He was so excited that I couldn't help but record him. His excitement is contagious!

His teammates were excited to see him and they got right to work, doing drills and listening to their coach. They're really pumped for their first game tomorrow! And, I'm really excited to see all of them play.

Let's go, Green Goblins!

**Dance also started tonight, but since it and soccer practice somewhat overlapped, I was too in a rush to get a picture of Vanessa...not that she'd let me...**

And, here we go!

This week starts off our busy time of the year: both lacrosse and soccer practices, as well as dance, start up again. It seems Tuesday is THE day for us; both Jeff and Ryan have practice, and Vanessa has dance. Piano is starting again on Wednesday, after three weeks of vacation, and Jeff has his first soccer game also on that day.

Whew!

Ethan likes to joke that at this point, he's probably my favorite child because his interests don't take him outside, lol. When we're in the thick of it, I'll most likely agree with him, jokingly, of course.

But, I have to admit, that even though the days will get busier and schedules will overlap, I'm happy to run my kids here and there, getting them to where they need to be. They're excelling at the things that matter to them, and they enjoy it. And, as a mom, their happiness and well-being is always my concern.

Just ignore my frazzled appearance when I attend games and recitals, okay?

Fall is coming

The weather turned cooler and since it's September, my fall porch decorations came out. I need to get more hay bales since the mice from our invasion this past winter ate through them, but I think this is a promising start.

Although, now that I've dragged the decorations out, the weather will probably turn hotter again. As usual. Well, whatever.

Happy Fall!
