Things my kids say at a funeral

On Thursday evening we headed up to Heber (we also slept over) to attend the wake of a very dear family friend who passed away last week. I've known this family since I was little; I grew up with their kids and grandkids in Hawaii. The patriarch, after a few years of failing health, peacefully passed away at his home, surrounded by his loved ones.

I miss him. He was like my grandpa, and quite the funny man. His funeral was quite the tribute to his life.

But, the next time I have to attend a funeral, I think I'll go by myself or wait until my kids are older. Here's some of things they said and/or did during the two days we were there:

Ryan: "Mom, I'm bored." Sorry, hon. I would sing and dance to occupy you, but I don't think it would be appropriate to do so in the middle of a wake.

Ethan: "Why are we going to the funeral AGAIN? We went yesterday." No, yesterday was the wake; today is the actual funeral, hon.

Vanessa: "Mom, I have to go potty!" Said quite loudly, three times in less than five minutes, DURING the funeral service.

Ryan: "I wish I'd gone to school today." Said after the funeral service was over, and while we were waiting for the luncheon to start. *sigh*

Ethan: "I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" After he accidentally set off the fire alarm in the church building. In his defense, the alarm was already defective and the slightest movement of the plastic covering set the alarm off.

Vanessa: "If he went home to Heavenly Father, why is he still here?" While poiting to the body in the casket when we said our final good-byes. Okay, so it made alot of people laugh; it was cute.

In hindsight, I can now laugh about these gems. But, at the time, the kids were really truing my patience! ;-)
